Welcome to Third Grade!
Dear Parents,
WELCOME TO 3RD GRADE! Home of the HUSKIES! It is my pleasure to welcome your family to my class. This will be a year of great growth for your child. It is my goal, with your help, to make the most of this year.
To make your child’s year rewarding and enjoyable, there are some important classroom procedures they will need to follow:
1. School begins promptly at 9:15 a.m. Students may enter the building as early as 8:45 a.m. to begin preparing for the day. I highly recommend your child get to school early enough to complete all of the morning procedures. I will begin class without delay.
2. I would like to call to your attention the importance of regular school attendance throughout the year. This can make the difference between satisfactory and below average academic performance. Do, however, keep sick children at home until they are well enough to spend the whole day in the classroom. The first day a child returns to school after any absence, he/she should bring a written excuse. They will also be responsible for making up any missed assignments when he/she returns. Assignments will not be given in advance for any type of absence.
3. So you may keep up with your child’s progress, please check their Highcroft Folder and Planner daily. Your child will bring home their school work in this folder'. This will include your child’s graded class work and assessments. Please review them with your child. It is very important you discuss and review incorrect answers with your child. Please also keep in mind your child does a majority of their work in their Journals (Reading, Math, Science, Writing, Word Study, etc.). The work within these journals are a part of your child’s grade too.
4. The daily assignment book (planner) is of utmost importance. It represents regular communication between home and school. This allows you to see what your child is doing in class each day and it will give you the opportunity to talk with you child about what they are learning. The assignment book (planner) must be signed every day. There will be times when we will need to ask questions or exchange information and the daily assignment book is the ideal place to do this because I will be checking for signatures daily. Each student will be expected to assume the following responsibilities with regard to the daily assignment book: (1) Record accurately, completely and legibly, all assignments, (2) Ask a parent to look at the planner, review it, and sign the page each day, and (3) Carry the assignment book to and from school every day.
5. Our class will have an afternoon snack break each day. I ask that you please provide a healthy snack for your child to enjoy. Also, in order to keep our school clean and shiny, I ask that your child drink water at this time rather than juice.
6. You are asked to let me know how your child gets to and from school. If there are any changes in these arrangements, temporary or permanent, please let me know as soon as possible in writing. Also, please inform me of any changes in phone numbers (work and/or home).
7. In order to be prepared and ready to start our day, my time (between 8:45 & 9:15 a.m.) will be spent greeting and assisting my students. It will not be a time in which I will be able to conference. With that being said, should you wish to schedule a conference in addition to the 2 routine fall and spring parent/teacher conferences, please let me know and we will set up a time to meet.
Again, I welcome your family to my class and I look forward to a productive and fun year! If you have any questions, please email me (best form of communication for me) or leave a message with the school secretary and I will return your call promptly. It is in your child’s best interest we work together with regard to his/her education. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. O'Brien
